President Trump has said the convicted Fort Hood shooter can be executed by firing squad. The 2009 Fort Hood attack, carried out by Army Major Nidal Hasan, left 13 people dead, and Hasan remains on death row. The statement has drawn attention to the death penalty and execution methods in the United States, with debate expected over the legality of Trump's intervention.
Why now: A sitting president is weighing in on the method of execution for a high-profile death row inmate, raising legal and political questions.
