The European Union is pushing to monitor potential unauthorised efforts to block out the sun, amid concern that rising temperatures could tempt governments or private actors into unsanctioned geoengineering experiments. Officials want a system to detect and track solar radiation modification attempts, which scientists warn carry major risks and lack global governance. The debate highlights growing unease as climate targets slip and once-fringe technologies gain attention.

Why now: Rising global temperatures and fears of unsanctioned climate-altering experiments have put solar geoengineering governance back on the political agenda.
