New documentary explores the life of Yasujiro Ozu
Original: Did Yasujiro Ozu hold the key to "the very secret of cinema itself"? Daniel Raim's stirring documentary "The Ozu Diaries
Filmmaker Daniel Raim has released "The Ozu Diaries," a documentary examining the life and legacy of Japanese director Yasujiro Ozu, whose work some critics say holds "the very secret of cinema itself." The film traces how the master of quiet, domestic dramas continues to influence filmmakers today, and coverage in The Japan Times has drawn attention to his lasting reverberations in contemporary cinema.
Why now: The release of a new documentary about one of cinema's most revered directors has renewed discussion of his enduring influence.
