Using AI to decode sperm whale communication
Original: Using A.I. to decode communication of sperm whales
Researchers are applying artificial intelligence to analyse the clicking patterns, or codas, that sperm whales use to communicate. The work, profiled in a feature on the man who listens to whales, aims to determine whether whale vocalisations carry structured language-like meaning. Commenters are debating how feasible it is to interpret another species' communication and what a breakthrough would mean for our understanding of animal intelligence.
Why now: Ongoing interest in AI projects attempting to translate animal communication, which raise both scientific and ethical questions.
