Google ordered to halt Finnish datacentre construction over environmental concerns
Original: Google told to halt work on datacentres in Finland over environmental concerns
Finnish authorities have ordered Google to stop work on two datacentre construction sites after the company failed to carry out required environmental impact assessments. The halt applies until the assessments are completed, putting one of Google's key European datacentre expansions on hold. The case highlights growing scrutiny of the environmental footprint of large tech infrastructure projects.
Why now: Regulators have taken rare enforcement action against a major tech company's infrastructure build, amid wider concern over datacentre growth and its environmental impact.
