IANA redesigns example.com to cut bandwidth and add translations
Original: IANA changed example.com on 28 September 2026 from a static English page to a basic HTML page plus a separate JavaScript
IANA has updated example.com, the long-running reserved domain used in documentation, replacing its static English page with a basic HTML page and a separate JavaScript file that adds notices in Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian and Spanish. According to DebugBear's change history, the switch happened on 28 September 2026, and IANA says splitting the files reduces bandwidth. Web developers are discussing the change since the page has been unchanged for years.
Why now: example.com is a fixture of web development, so even a minor technical change to it draws wide attention among developers.
