Namibia clears phosphate mining project opposed by fishing industry
Original: Namibia grants environmental certificate to phosphate mining project long opposed by nation’s fishing industry
Namibia has issued an environmental clearance certificate for a phosphate mining project despite years of opposition from the country's fishing industry. Fishing groups have long argued that seabed phosphate mining threatens marine ecosystems and the fish stocks on which their sector depends. The approval marks a significant step for the project and a setback for industry opponents and conservationists.
Why now: The environmental certificate represents a major government decision in a long-running conflict between mining and fishing interests.
