Ethiopia and Eritrea expel diplomats as tensions flare
Original: New War Near Middle East | Ethiopia-Eritrea Tensions Explode: Diplomats Expelled | WION Breaking
Ethiopia and Eritrea are reported to be expelling each other's diplomats in a sharp escalation of hostilities, raising fears of a renewed war in the Horn of Africa with implications for the wider Middle East. The two neighbours, whose 1998-2000 border war killed tens of thousands, have seen relations deteriorate again following Ethiopia's conflict in Tigray. Observers warn the diplomatic rupture could mark a serious new crisis in the region.
Why now: The sudden expulsion of diplomats between two historically hostile neighbours has raised fears of a new war in a strategically sensitive region.
