New York Declares Disaster Emergency Amid Worst US Measles Year in 35 Years
Original: New York Declares Disaster Emergency as US Measles Cases Hit a 35-Year High https://gizmodo.com/new-york-declares-disast
New York has declared a disaster emergency as measles cases across the United States reach their highest level in 35 years. The declaration gives state officials expanded powers to respond to the outbreak, including measures to curb the spread of the highly contagious virus. The milestone underscores growing concern among public health officials about declining vaccination coverage and the resurgence of a disease once considered eliminated in the country.
Why now: The declaration of a disaster emergency over a vaccine-preventable disease at a 35-year high is a striking public health development.
