US restricts troops in Okinawa after Marine arrested in killing
Original: US military restricts troops from leaving the base in Okinawa after Marine is arrested in a killing
US military commanders have imposed a liberty restriction on American troops in Okinawa, Japan, barring most personnel from leaving their bases after a US Marine was arrested in connection with a killing. The move affects thousands of service members stationed on the island and comes as the large American presence there already faces local opposition. Officials have not said how long the restrictions will remain in place.
Why now: The killing case and the unprecedented movement restrictions renew long-running tensions over the US military presence in Okinawa.
