US military orders two-day pause on Okinawa after Marine's arrest
Original: US military orders 2-day pause on Okinawa following Marine’s arrest for alleged murder
US forces on Okinawa have ordered a two-day pause in activities following the arrest of a US Marine on suspicion of murder. The measure, a rare stand-down, is typically used to underscore discipline and reassure the local community after serious incidents involving American personnel. The case is likely to strain relations between the US military and Okinawan residents, who have long voiced concerns over the heavy American troop presence on the island.
Why now: The serious nature of the alleged crime and the rare disciplinary stand-down have drawn wide attention to US-Japan base tensions.
