St Augustine's reservations about 'just war' revisited
Original: St Augustine’s reservations about ‘just war’
St Augustine, the fourth-century theologian long credited as the father of 'just war' theory, is being discussed for the doubts he himself expressed about the doctrine. The framing suggests a re-examination of how Augustine balanced the need to restrain violence with his misgivings about legitimising war at all.
Why now: Ongoing wars have renewed interest in whether religious just-war thinking can truly justify modern conflict.
