Why Olympic Champion Zhang Jiaqi Won't Play the 'Filial Child' Role
Original: Why Doesn't Olympic Champion Zhang Jiaqi Play Along With the "Loving Mother, Filial Child" Act? |...
Chinese Olympic diving champion Zhang Jiaqi is at the centre of discussion over her refusal to go along with a staged 'loving mother, filial child' public narrative. Commentators are debating why she resists performing family harmony for the cameras and what that says about pressure on Chinese athletes to fit approved storytelling templates. Details of exactly what she said or declined remain thinly reported.
Why now: Her pushback against an expected sentimental family narrative challenges the usual media script around Chinese Olympic athletes, drawing wide attention.
