Nobel Prize in Physics Awarded for Neutrino Astronomy Breakthrough
Original: Nobel Prize in Physics Is Awarded for the Advent of Neutrino Astronomy
The Nobel Prize in Physics has been awarded for work that opened the field of neutrino astronomy, the study of ghostly subatomic particles that travel across the universe and can pass through planets unaffected. The honor recognizes researchers whose detectors caught neutrinos from space, giving scientists a new way to observe cosmic events such as exploding stars that traditional telescopes cannot see.
Why now: The announcement of a new Nobel Prize in Physics always draws immediate global attention, especially when it honors a whole new way of observing the universe.
