American alpine skier Mikaela Shiffrin plans to reduce her slalom racing this season and concentrate instead on giant slalom and super-G events. The change marks a notable shift for the most decorated World Cup winner in skiing history, who has long dominated the slalom discipline, and signals a new emphasis on speed races ahead of the Olympic season.
Why now: Shiffrin is one of skiing's biggest stars, so any change to her race schedule ahead of the Olympics draws wide attention.
