Benjamin Davis, a former senior official at the UN's Food and Agriculture Organization, says he was dismissed last week for his work highlighting hunger in Gaza, and has launched an appeal against the decision. The allegation has drawn attention to claims that the UN body is punishing staff who speak out about the humanitarian situation facing Palestinians.

Why now: The claim that a UN official was fired for raising the alarm about Gaza hunger has sparked debate about silencing of humanitarian workers.
