Original: The Great Plains face a surprising threat: Too many trees #Climate The Great Plains face a surpri...
The Great Plains of North America are being discussed for an unexpected environmental problem: an overabundance of trees. Woody encroachment, driven by fire suppression and changing land use, is spreading trees into grasslands, threatening native prairie ecosystems, grazing land, and wildlife that depend on open plains, prompting debate over how to manage the shift.
Why now: Climate and land management discussions are highlighting how woody plant encroachment is degrading grassland ecosystems.
