Police Lock Down Gosport Streets as 149 Migrants Arrive
Original: Police Lock Down Gosport for 149 Migrant Channel Arrivals
Hampshire police imposed a lockdown in Gosport to manage the arrival of 149 migrants who crossed the Channel by small boat. The operation prompted a strong local and national reaction, with residents reporting a heavy police presence and debate resuming over the government's handling of Channel crossings and accommodation of new arrivals in towns like Gosport.
Why now: The scale of the arrivals and the unusually heavy police operation in a small English town are drawing fresh attention to the Channel migration debate.
