French police under fire amid student protest controversy
Original: policier
Several police-related stories are dominating French news. A 38-year-old officer died during an intervention in Champigny-sur-Marne. Meanwhile, an officer is accused of sexual assault against a woman during high school demonstrations in Paris, and in Belfort a police commander was beaten after the arrest of a student in a river. The student's complaint alleges he was nearly drowned, and his lawyer is now accusing the local prosecutor of twisting the narrative.
Why now: Conflicting accounts of a viral student arrest and a beating of a police commander in Belfort have reignited debate over police conduct in France.
