President Trump has approved the execution of the Fort Hood shooter by firing squad, according to the Pentagon. The decision, confirmed by US military officials, marks a rare federal military execution and is drawing attention to the use of firing squads in American capital punishment and the administration's push to resume executions.
Why now: The approval of an execution by firing squad is an unusual and controversial use of presidential authority over military justice.
