Comparisons between Italy and the UK's coronavirus death tolls are drawing attention, with Italy at 28,710 deaths and the UK at 28,131. Commenters note that Italy's outbreak began weeks earlier, so the UK has reached a similar number in less time, and ask why the shock once expressed on British news about Italy's crisis has faded.
Why now: The UK's death toll has almost matched Italy's, prompting criticism of the government's pandemic response.
