Debate erupts over whether mathematics is 'over'
Original: Is mathematics over, or just graduating?
A widely shared essay asks whether mathematics as a discipline is finished or simply entering a new phase, under the framing 'Is mathematics over, or just graduating?'. Readers are split between those who see the question as a provocation about the field's future and those treating it as a genuine turning point for how mathematical work gets done.
Why now: People are debating a provocative essay questioning the future of mathematics, likely amid wider anxiety about technology transforming intellectual work.
