India Seeks Black Sea Shipping Deal, Moves Past Advocacy
Original: India Moves Beyond Advocacy to Seek Black Sea Shipping Deal
India is reportedly seeking a concrete deal on Black Sea shipping, shifting from purely voicing support for freedom of navigation to pursuing practical arrangements for its maritime trade. The move comes as attacks on commercial vessels in the Black Sea during the Russia-Ukraine war have disrupted shipping routes and raised insurance and trade costs, making secure access a direct economic interest for New Delhi.
Why now: The Black Sea is a vital corridor for India's trade with Ukraine and Russia, and wartime risks have made securing shipping access urgent.
