Original: US envoy holds rare meeting with Sudan's top general in push to seek end to fighting
A US envoy has held a rare meeting with Sudan's top general, Army chief Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, as Washington intensifies efforts to end the devastating war between the army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces. The conflict, which began in April 2023, has killed tens of thousands and displaced millions, creating one of the world's worst humanitarian crises. The direct talks signal renewed American diplomatic engagement despite repeated failed ceasefires.
Why now: Direct US diplomacy with Sudan's military leadership marks a notable development in stalled international efforts to end the country's civil war.
