Hochul declares disaster emergency over upstate New York measles outbreak
Original: Gov. Hochul declares upstate NY measles outbreak a ‘disaster emergency’
New York Governor Kathy Hochul has declared a disaster emergency in response to a measles outbreak in upstate New York. The declaration gives state health officials expanded powers to respond to the spread of the highly contagious virus, which remains a public health concern despite being declared eliminated in the United States in 2000. Officials are expected to detail containment measures, which may include quarantine rules and vaccination requirements in affected areas.
Why now: A sitting governor invoking emergency powers over a preventable disease outbreak is a significant public health development drawing wide attention.
