A former leader of Manchester City Council has publicly defended the commercial deals struck between the city council and the owners of Manchester City Football Club. The arrangements, which involved land deals and regeneration schemes in east Manchester, have faced scrutiny over the influence of the club's wealthy Gulf backers on local development. The ex-leader argues the partnerships brought investment and jobs to the city, while critics question the transparency and wisdom of close ties between public authorities and state-linked owners.
Why now: Renewed scrutiny of the relationship between Manchester's local government and Manchester City's Gulf owners has prompted the former leader to speak out.
