Italian authorities at a Sicilian port have detained a man found transporting 300 tortoises and 77 parrots allegedly destined for Malta. The seizure highlights ongoing concerns about wildlife trafficking routes through Mediterranean ports, with conservationists calling for stronger enforcement against the illegal exotic animal trade between North Africa, southern Europe and the EU.
Why now: The sheer scale of the illegal wildlife shipment has drawn attention to Mediterranean animal trafficking networks.
