Original: Man caught with 300 tortoises and 77 parrots bound for Malta at Sicilian port By Angela Giuffrida in Rome Italian police
Italian police detained a Maltese citizen at a Sicilian port after finding 300 tortoises and 77 parrots packed inside his car, allegedly bound for Malta. He is now under investigation for wildlife smuggling. The case has drawn attention to the scale of animal trafficking moving through Mediterranean ports and the conditions the animals endured in transit.
Why now: The sheer number of animals crammed into one car makes this an unusually dramatic alleged smuggling case.
