US, Russia and China Race to Put Nuclear Reactors on the Moon

Original: Three Superpowers are Racing to Put Nuclear Reactors on the Moon. The United States wants a nuclear reactor on the moon

The United States plans to place a nuclear reactor on the Moon by 2030, while a Russian-Chinese partnership is developing a rival reactor targeted for 2036. The accelerating race has drawn criticism from some leading scientists, who warn that rockets carrying nuclear materials can explode, posing risks to Earth. Supporters see lunar reactors as key to future bases and exploration.

Why now: Great-power competition in space, and the safety worries around launching nuclear material, make the story timely.
