Florida counties declare emergency over dengue outbreak

Original: dengue

Several Florida counties have declared a state of emergency after an outbreak of dengue fever. The mosquito-borne illness, more common in tropical regions, has prompted local health officials to step up control measures. The declarations allow counties to mobilise resources for mosquito control and public health warnings, and authorities are urging residents to avoid mosquito bites and remove standing water.

Why now: An unusual dengue outbreak in the United States is raising concern about the spread of a tropical disease to Florida.
