A fully implantable cochlear implant has launched, according to an IEEE Spectrum report. Unlike conventional cochlear implants, which rely on external components such as a microphone and speech processor worn behind the ear, this device is placed entirely under the skin. Discussion is circulating among technology and medical communities, with commenters weighing in on the engineering challenges and what the development could mean for people with severe hearing loss.
Why now: A fully implantable hearing device marks a notable engineering milestone in medical technology, drawing attention from tech and health communities.
