Russia's uncrewed robot tank malfunctioned during its debut military demonstration in front of President Putin. The vehicle repeatedly lost its control links during the display and eventually became stuck in the mud, forcing operators to switch to a human driver — who still could not free it. The public breakdown of the flagged robotic combat vehicle has drawn attention to questions about the readiness of Russia's unmanned ground systems.
Why now: The embarrassing public failure of advanced military technology in front of Putin made the story newsworthy.
