Despite Recent Shortcomings, the United Nations Still Matters
Original: Despite recent shortcomings, we still need the United Nations
A student newspaper commentary argues that although the United Nations has fallen short on issues like conflict prevention and Security Council reform, the world still needs the organisation. The piece contends that criticism of UN failures should not obscure its work in humanitarian aid, peacekeeping and international cooperation, and that the answer to its weaknesses is reform rather than abandonment.
Why now: Ongoing criticism of UN effectiveness in major global conflicts has renewed debate over whether the organisation is still worth supporting.
