The mantis shrimp is being called the ocean's hardest-hitting boxer, with a punch that accelerates as fast as a .22-caliber bullet and can smash aquarium glass. The animal also has extraordinary vision, with 12 to 16 color channels compared to three in humans, and can see polarized light invisible to people.

Why now: Remarkable animal facts about speed and vision routinely spread as shareable science content.

Evidence

• The ocean's hardest-hitting boxer. A mantis shrimp's punch accelerates as fast as a .22-caliber bullet — enough force to smash aquarium glass. It also sees 12 to 16 color channels (humans see 3), plus polarized light we can't even detect. # marinebiology # biology # ocean #… · eatrics · 6
