Moscow police detained more than 60 people at a Communist Party rally on Sunday that had been officially authorized, after participants began chanting anti-Kremlin slogans including "Freedom for political prisoners," "For fair elections" and "Down with the Tsar." The detentions highlight the tightening limits on public protest in Russia, where even permitted gatherings are being broken up once they stray from approved messaging.

Why now: The arrest of dozens at an officially sanctioned rally shows escalating suppression of dissent in Russia, drawing attention amid the Ukraine conflict.
