Students spend a day behind bars with incarcerated women in Thailand
Original: One day behind bars: Students and incarcerated women break prison stigma in Thailand
A United Nations-backed initiative in Thailand brought university students to spend one day inside a prison alongside incarcerated women, aiming to break down stigma around imprisonment. The exchange allowed participants to hear women's stories directly and highlighted conditions faced by female inmates, part of broader efforts to promote humane treatment and rehabilitation in the justice system.
Why now: It is an unusual direct-contact programme that challenges public perceptions of prisoners and is being highlighted by the United Nations.
