Chinese diplomats court MEPs across the political spectrum
Original: China/European Union • Chinese diplomacy reaching out to MEPs across political board
Chinese diplomats are stepping up outreach to members of the European Parliament, targeting lawmakers across the political spectrum rather than traditional partners only. The push reflects Beijing's effort to build influence in Brussels at a time of strained EU-China relations over trade, Ukraine and security issues. Contacts with MEPs from varied political groups suggest a broader lobbying strategy aimed at shaping European debate and policy.
Why now: EU-China relations are tense, making Beijing's attempts to win over European lawmakers a timely diplomatic story.
