Ethiopian government forces have recaptured Mekelle, the regional capital of Tigray, in a major development amid renewed fighting in northern Ethiopia. The city's fall raises fears of a return to the kind of prolonged and devastating conflict that followed 2020, when war between federal forces and Tigrayan authorities killed thousands and displaced millions before a 2022 peace deal. Observers warn the latest escalation could unravel that fragile truce.
Why now: The fall of Tigray's capital revives fears of another large-scale war in Ethiopia breaking the 2022 peace agreement.
