Mapping Every F5 and EF5 Tornado in the US Since 1950

Original: Every F5 and EF5 tornado in the United States since 1950, mapped by the state it began in. 60 of 73,424 - fewer than one

A new data visualization maps every F5 and EF5 tornado recorded in the United States since 1950 by the state where it began. Of 73,424 recorded tornadoes, just 60 reached the top rating, yet those storms killed 1,350 of the 6,341 total tornado deaths. Oklahoma leads with eight such tornadoes, followed by Alabama with seven. Only nineteen states have ever experienced one.

Why now: The striking concentration of deaths from a tiny fraction of tornadoes makes the mapping of these rare, extreme storms compelling to weather and data enthusiasts
