Japanese defense minister again raises nuclear weapons option
Original: Japanese defense minister again floats acquiring nuclear weapons
Japan's defense minister has once again suggested the country could look into acquiring nuclear weapons, according to a report by the World Socialist Web Site. The remark reopens a debate that has long remained taboo in Japan, the only country attacked with nuclear weapons, and touches on the US-Japan security alliance. Officials and commentators have frequently criticized such suggestions as undermining Japan's non-nuclear principles.
Why now: Calls by a sitting Japanese defense minister to consider nuclear weapons challenge Japan's long-standing non-nuclear policy and raise questions about regional security.
