Korea Football Association Apologizes for Military Exemption Controversy
The Korea Football Association has issued an apology amid a controversy concerning military service exemptions connected to the sport. The row centers on how elite athletes, including footballers, can qualify for exemptions from South Korea's mandatory military service, a sensitive issue in a country where conscription applies to nearly all able-bodied men. The association expressed regret as criticism mounts over perceived unfairness in the exemption system.
Why now: Ongoing public anger in South Korea over fairness of military service exemptions for athletes has put the football authority under pressure to respond.
