GOP senator's perjury trap for Jack Smith backfires
A Republican senator's attempt to ensnare special counsel Jack Smith with perjury concerns has failed, with the strategy instead drawing criticism and unwanted attention to the senator's own conduct. The episode centers on congressional scrutiny of Smith's investigations into Donald Trump. Commentators say the maneuver has backfired politically, with coverage focusing on the weakness of the accusation rather than on Smith's testimony.
Why now: Fresh political fallout from a Republican attempt to discredit special counsel Jack Smith is driving discussion of Trump-related investigations.
