Original: Nearly all women arriving on small boats have been raped, says Shabana Mahmood
Justice Secretary Shabana Mahmood has said that nearly all women arriving in the UK on small boats have been raped, highlighting sexual violence as a driving factor behind women's journeys across the Channel. Her remarks add a striking claim to the ongoing political debate over small-boat crossings and how the government should respond to asylum seekers, with the comments likely to fuel discussion on both the scale of abuse migrants flee and UK asylum policy.
Why now: It is a striking statement from a senior cabinet minister amid heated debate over small-boat crossings and asylum policy.
