A backyard ecologist in Illinois released a male monarch butterfly they had raised by hand. The butterfly spent a couple of hours resting in a neighbor's tree before flying down to bask in the sun on a tomato plant. The release is part of ongoing efforts to raise monarchs at home and support the species.
Why now: Monarch butterflies are in decline, so hand-raising and releasing them draws attention from nature enthusiasts.
