Russia targets Ukrainian power grid ahead of winter
Original: Russia aims to plunge Ukraine into winter darkness with mass power grid attacks
Russia is carrying out mass attacks on Ukraine's power grid, aiming to leave the country without electricity as winter sets in. Strikes on energy infrastructure threaten heating and light for millions of Ukrainians, repeating last year's tactic of plunging cities into darkness during the coldest months. The campaign has drawn concern over the humanitarian impact on civilians facing winter without reliable power.
Why now: Renewed Russian strikes on energy infrastructure ahead of winter raise fears of a humanitarian crisis in Ukraine.
