Mahmood: nearly all women arriving on small boats were raped
Original: Nearly all women arriving on small boats have been raped, says Shabana Mahmood https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2026/
Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood has said that nearly all women who cross the Channel to Britain on small boats have been raped, according to the Guardian. Her remarks highlight the severe violence many female asylum seekers endure before reaching the UK, and have drawn attention to how the asylum system and charities assess and support survivors of sexual violence. The claim has fuelled ongoing debate in Britain about migration policy and the protections owed to vulnerable arrivals.
Why now: The home secretary's striking statement about sexual violence against Channel migrants has intensified the UK's ongoing migration policy debate.
