October 4 marks the anniversary of the 1936 Battle of Cable Street, when anti-fascist demonstrators in London's East End, including local unions, communists and Jewish residents, clashed with Oswald Mosley's British Union of Fascists and the Metropolitan Police escorting them. The march was blocked and ultimately turned back, and the event remains a touchstone for anti-fascist organizing.
