On October 4, 1887, some 10,000 Louisiana sugarcane workers walked off the job, launching a massive strike organized with the Knights of Labor to protest harsh living and working conditions. Many of the strikers were effectively bound to the plantations through debt, leaving them in a status resembling slavery, which made the walkout a striking challenge to the plantation labor system of the post-emancipation South.
