gemsbok

African gemsbok, an antelope species introduced to New Mexico decades ago, are expanding their range in the state. New research examines how far the animals could spread as climate change alters temperature and rainfall patterns across the American Southwest, raising questions about their ecological impact on native desert ecosystems.

New research covered by EurekAlert examines the spread of gemsbok, an African antelope introduced in New Mexico, and models how far the species could expand across the southwestern United States as climate change alters habitats. Scientists are weighing the ecological risks of the growing population and its potential to become an invasive species in warming, arid regions.
