The United Nations has observed the first International Day for Awareness of the Development Needs and Challenges Specific to Landlocked Developing Countries. The day highlights the difficulties faced by the 32 countries without direct sea access, including high trade and transport costs and limited market access. The UN's Office of the High Representative for the Least Developed Countries, Landlocked Developing Countries and Small Island Developing States is leading awareness efforts.
